Leupold Hawthorne Binoculars
by Virginia Hawthorne
I spend most of my year scouting for the coming hunting season. I have spent countless hours holding a pair of binoculars and glassing open fields. One of my favorite past times is driving the country roads in the evening looking for an opportunity to catch a peek at this seasons up and comers. I often find that daylight slips away all too quickly and those once clear images become barely discernible as the light fades. Quality optics are necessary for the serious hunter and Leupold’s Hawthorne 10×42 is a tool I can count on when looking for this year’s obsession.

Upon initial inspection, the Hawthorne series have many excellent features including a nice eye relief which is critical for glassing long periods or for those who wear eyeglasses. The twist up eyecups are easily adjustable for personal comfort. The center focus dial with lockable diopter adjustments makes focusing a breeze. When holding the Leupold Hawthorne you can feel the slim and balanced in-line design that is perfect for almost any hand size. At a weight of 23.1 ounces and 5.5 inches in length, these binoculars are easy to stabilize with minimal shake, when focusing on deer at far distances.
Despite being slim and lightweight, they are built to last. Durability is a quality I look for in all my hunting equipment and this binocular fits the bill. The body is made of aluminum and covered by durable rubber armor. The rubber provides steady grip making them perfect for all hunting conditions. The binoculars are 100 percent waterproof and ideal for the rugged outdoorsmen.
One of the more notable qualities is the ability of the Hawthorne binoculars to deliver crystal-clear images in low-light conditions. Thanks to the fully multi-coated lenses and phase, coated BAK 4 prisms the binoculars provide a high resolution, amazing color fidelity, and high contrast images giving the outdoorsman a realistic view of wildlife. They feature a close focus of 10 feet and a field of view of 267 feet at 1,000 yards providing versatility for all outdoor enthusiasts. This is more than sufficient for the western whitetail fanatic who spends summer evenings glassing alfalfa fields.
Final Thoughts
Leupold is known for providing quality optics and the Hawthorne 10×42 model is no exception. I am all about getting my money’s worth when it comes to purchasing hunting equipment. These binoculars have proven their worth and I have not been disappointed.
When I find myself gazing through my Hawthorne binoculars, I have a clear picture of my upcoming hunting season. My passion for deer hunting is fueled every time I see those bucks break through the forest’s edge as dusk falls on the open fields. Even though these binoculars cannot put you on a buck of a lifetime, I certainly consider them a valued tool when it comes to locating a mature western whitetail.
