Ramcat Broadheads
by Thomas Grill
In 2013, I dealt with the nightmare that no hunter ever wants to experience. I was unable to recover my animal. I placed what appeared to be a perfect double lung shot on a doe at about 30 yards. I wasn’t being picky, she gave me the perfect opportunity to put some meat into the freezer. The only thing that concerned me was how the arrow never passed all the way through her, instead it lodged itself in a manner where it stuck through both sides of her chest cavity. Well, after tracking her for hundreds of yards, disappointment and sadness sank in as the blood trail ended. She was gone. Though I never recovered her, I refused to go out and fill my tag with another deer. Out of respect for the animal, I felt that doe was my deer and ethically I was tagged out for that Wyoming deer season.
The shot was great. However, the arrow did stick though both sides of her and obstructed the wounds which could be the reason I didn’t get the amount of blood that I expected in this given situation. This is a situation that I never want to have happen again. When the season passed, I decided to mix it up and switch broadheads. Following this incident and doing significant research online, I decide to switch from a big name brand to a lesser known brand called “Ramcat”. They consider this the most accurate and deepest penetrating broadhead on the market. Though it is considered a fix blade broadhead, the easiest way to describe this product is that it is almost looks like a hybrid between both a mechanical and fixed blade design. I was really intrigued by this concept due to how the blades pivot and release into the opposite direction and can cut whether they are going in or coming out. A 3-pack of these broadheads run around $40. While replacement blades top out at about $16. But the price does slightly vary depending on whether you get 100 grain or 125 grain products. After I purchased a 3-pack of the 100 grain Ramcats, I decided to test this product on my block target at 20 yards. First, I shot a field point. Without pulling the arrow, I then shot the Ramcat. The Ramcat laced arrow actually flew true to the field point and it split the nock and portion of the shaft of the first arrow. Even with this type of contact, the Ramcat still punched through the target almost four inches farther than the field point. Subsequently to these results, I was sold on this broadhead.
Within three hours of parading my bow around for the 2014 Wyoming archery season, I was given the shot that I was looking for. A uniquely antlered 5X4 bull elk made the mistake of answering my cow calls and presented himself at 25 yards. My arrow tipped with a 100 grain Ramcat and its 1 3/8 inch cutting diameter blew completely through him like he wasn’t even standing there. I even ended up with the opportunity to watch this beautiful creature fall within the vicinity of where I shot at him. Upon further inspection of this animal, I noticed that there was a rifle shot wound from the previous year’s rifle season just under my arrow’s entrance. This previous injury is most likely the contributing factor to his antler deformity. Though I do not know the whole story behind his rifle shot wound, my arrow tipped with a Ramcat broadhead performed much better than that bullet did. Not only did this product live up to my expectations, it exceeded them. Its penetration is remarkable. It truly does “HIT LIKE A RAM AND CUT LIKE A CAT.” Whether I am in pursuit of whitetails along stream bottoms or back country elk, all of my arrows are now fixed with Ramcat broadheads.

$39.50
100 GRAIN | 3 PACK
- DRAFTING: Patented deep lobes in cutting tip: the deep lobes create an air foil that drafts wind over the blades and disallows windplaning.
- HYDROFOIL: Once in the animal, the lobes create a hydrofoil forcing body mass outward and thus removing friction down the arrow shaft; this results in the deepest penetration on the market.
- Offset and Stealth blade design
- The blades are .032″ thick for strength and have no blade windows.
- The replacement blades are sharpened front and rear to create a backcut if the head does not pass through the animal. It will cut its way back out!
- One piece stainless steel body construction.
- 100 grain, 1 3/8? cut diameter.
- Field point accuracy and deadly quiet in flight.
