Endure Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second's encounter with God and with eternity. -Paulo Coelho We have all had those moments on a hunt where it feels like everything that could go wrong has. Blown stalks, broken … [Read more...] about Endure
Not So Reality T.V.
“Oh there he is! He didn’t go 50 yards from my stand!”How many times have you heard this line while watching a hunting show? Have you ever wondered why the “hunter” didn’t just follow the cameraman to the dead animal? I mean the cameraman was there already because he is filming the excitement of the recovery from the animal’s final resting place. Do these shows think the … [Read more...] about Not So Reality T.V.
MOVEMENT
I caught the movement out of the corner of my eye, knowing I was all alone in the canyon, I was a little afraid to look back to see what it was. I took one big step forward and the movement followed me. All I saw was a dark black form in my peripheral vision almost daring me to make a move. Just look behind … [Read more...] about MOVEMENT
Sight Picture
When I bought my first sight for my bow it was simple, and functional. It had 5 pins, a level, and used Allen screws to adjust it, piece of cake, mmm.. cake. The 5 pins were sighted in at 10 yard increments from 20 to 60 yards, the max range I had with my Bear Element at 70 pounds, and life was good. Things changed when I upgraded my bow to The Truth II I purchased next. The … [Read more...] about Sight Picture
DETACHED
There is no day like the long awaited first day of a hunt. The crisp cold air in the pre-dawn darkness (or if you live in Arizona the slightly cooler air), the excitement of what is to come and what adventures this season will bring. No matter the cause, the ability to push past these moments is what defines us. The road to success is not flat and smoothly paved, it is steep and full of boulders we must navigate. Would you want it any other way? All my … [Read more...] about FOCUS
Chasing Technology
CHASING TECHNOLOGY It wasn't but a generation ago that a hunter could go to his local hardware store pick up a lever action 30-30 or convert an old Mauser 98 by bending the bolt down as to not snag it on brush, grab some B.D.U.s from the local Army Surplus store and take to the woods to hunt down meat for his family. If you were a bow hunter you might carve your own bows … [Read more...] about Chasing Technology
Backcountry DIY
MO' STYLES, MO' PROBLEMS A while back I was told by a fellow hunter that the trend of backcountry do it yourself hunting is ruining the sport of hunting, and that all DIY hunters do is "wink at themselves in the mirror and thump their chests." I couldn't help but find this funny and have actually adopted the wink and thumping of my chest as a daily routine (oh I just caught a … [Read more...] about Backcountry DIY
Fall Hunting Season
The fall hunting season has come and gone, and spring turkey and bear will be opening before we know it, but what do we do as hunters in between seasons? You know that time of year where everyday just drags on and you search catalogues and on-line stores for the newest and greatest gear, or those closeout items you couldn't bring yourself to buy until they dropped to 50% off. … [Read more...] about Fall Hunting Season
