Danner Powderhorn Hunting Boots
Danner Powderhorn hunting boots will get you in and out of the backcountry, as well as everywhere in between.
by Darren Choate, Editor In Chief
This season, I put the Danner Powderhorns to the test, while hunting a diversity of terrain. The season started with an archery mule deer hunt in the high country with clients, followed by an archery elk adventure with a few friends. A month later, I was guiding an antelope hunt on the prairie. Next, I was in the backcountry on my son’s early Coues deer hunt. At some point, I actually got to hunt for myself–albeit only for a couple of days–on a mule deer hunt in the rugged Sonoran desert. Finally, I was able to sneak away one more time for a day-trip back into the backcountry for Coues deer with my bow–my favorite hunt of the year. Every step I took on all of those hunts was made in the comfort of the Danner Powderhorn hunting boots.
For me, there are three must-haves in a boot: 1) Leather Upper: to provide as much protection from cactus as possible, 2) Waterproof: to keep warm and dry–even in the arid Southwest, it rains and snows more than you think, and 3) Aggressive Outsole: traction is a must where I hunt. Of course, those three must-haves, have to be wrapped into a comfortable package, and the Danner Powderhorns are all of the above. I wore the boots on the first hunt straight out of the box with absolutely no discomfort whatsoever.
Now, I understand that the most important factor in boot choice is finding something that works for you, not for me. Depending on when and where you hunt, insulation will be a factor in boot choice. The Powderhorns are available without insulation, as well as with 400G and 1000G Thinsulate Ultra insulation. Boot weight is another determining factor in boot selection. The Powderhorn is right in that common 4-pound range, depending on the insulation choice. Another factor for some is boot height. the Powderhorn is a 10-inch boot, which is right in the middle of available choices. Below is a full feature and specification list to help you determine if the Danner Powderhorn is the right hunting boot for you.
FEATURES | Danner Powderhorn Hunting Boots
FULL-GRAIN LEATHER UPPER
To ensure its quality, we put our leather through six different tests before making our selection. Our full-grain leathers are the strongest and most durable form of leather.
GORE-TEX® (GTX)
100% waterproof and breathable, GORE-TEX® liners ensure that no water gets in, while allowing sweat and moisture to get out.
400G THINSULATE ULTRA INSULATION
High-performance insulation that keeps you warm in the snow and rain without weighing you down.
REMOVABLE ORTHOLITE FOOTBED
Three layers of varying density are combined for maximum cushioning and support. The entire footbed is made of open-cell polyurethane for better heat dissipation and air circulation.
BI FIT BOARD
By combining the shank, lasting board, and midsole into a single unified piece that is molded to match the shape and contours of our boots, we were able to reduce a significant amount of weight from the boot without sacrificing support.
DANNER POWDERHORN OUTSOLE
Multi-directional lugs provide ultra-durable traction on diverse terrain and in variable weather conditions.
MESH LINED TONGUE CONSTRUCTION
Features a mesh liner layered over a waterproof membrane on the tongue to help regulate both moisture and temperature where it has the largest impact, on the top of your foot.
MULTI-DENSITY FOAM
A patterning of multi-density foam eliminates hot spots and pinch points for a more comfortable upper.
HOW IT FITS
The 851 last is an update to our popular 850 last. This last fits true to size with an athletic and supportive fit while providing ample room in the toe. Offering a specific heel shape that locks the heel in place for better fit and comfort on the back end of the boot, this supportive fit is ideal for those needing high mileage performance from their gear.
RECRAFTABLE
Extend the life of your boot with our recrafting services. Please note we are unable to replace the liner on this style due to the more technical construction of our lightweight Bi-Fit board. This boot is eligible for a boot stretch, basic and resole packages. See our Recrafting page.
